You can improve your heroes in several ways.

 To do so, you must collect Exp crystals and evolution scrolls to improve your heroes when they reach the max limit. Heroes will unlock new skills after evolution. You can obtain Evolution Scrolls by completing adventure levels. You also must collect hero shards to strengthen your heroes and unlock Legion and Adventure skills.

Improving heroes from all aspects can significantly boost their abilities in Legion Campaigns and Adventure Levels.
