You can hide a certain number of troops in the Safe House for a limited duration, up to 8 hours.
If your city is attacked during this time, hidden troops will not be harmed.

To retrieve your hidden troops, tap on the Safe House and select Recall. Note that you can recall troops once every 5 minutes.

Increasing your Expedition Capacity will raise the maximum number of troops you can hide in the Safe House.
